数と量の“ちょうど良い曖昧さ”を掴む

英語の会話やメールで、数や量をどう表現するかは意外とセンスが出ます。数字で「3」と書けば正確ですが、すべてを数値で言い切るとドライに響くことも。逆に、ぼかしすぎると伝わらない。今日は、ネイティブが日常的に使う“ほどよい曖昧さ”の語感を整理し、今すぐ使えるコツをまとめます。

1) a few / few（可算名詞）

• a few = 「少しはある」（ポジティブ）
  • I have a few questions.（いくつか質問があります）
• few = 「ほとんどない」（ネガティブ）
  • I have few options.（選択肢がほとんどない）

▶ポイント：a の有無で温度が真逆に。a few は「足りるかも」、few は「足りない」。

2) a little / little（不可算名詞）

• a little water / time / money = 「少しはある」
  • I have a little time before the meeting.
• little = 「ほぼない」
  • We have little time left.（時間がほとんど残っていない）

▶不可算（数えない）名詞に注意：time, money, advice, information など。

3) several（3〜5、少し幅のある“複数”）

• We had several issues.（いくつかの問題があった）
• I called several times.（何度か電話した）

▶「そこそこ量がある」ニュアンスで、a few より多め。

4) a couple of（ふつう“2、せいぜい2〜3”）

• a couple of minutes（2分くらい）
• a couple of ideas（2つほど）
  ※人によっては「2〜3」のラフな使い方をしますが、厳密には2に近いと理解しておくと安全。

5) dozen / dozens of

• a dozen = 12、two dozen = 24
• dozens of = 「何十もの」
  • dozens of emails（何十通ものメール）

▶ビジネスでもよく出ます。数字＋dozenで端的に。

6) about / around / roughly（“おおよそ”のクッション）

• about 10 people（約10人）
• around 30 minutes（30分ほど）
• roughly 5%（概ね5％）

▶前置きに置くと、相手の期待値を柔らかく調整できる。

7) just over / just under / nearly / almost（“境目”の言い方）

• just over a year（1年ちょっと）
• just under 100（100弱）
• nearly / almost done（ほぼ終わり）

▶メールで進捗を伝えるときに便利。正確さと余裕の両立。

8) 文化メモ：数を言い切らない“配慮”

英語圏でも、初期見積もりや雑談では幅を持たせるのが自然。

• 固く正確：We had 3 incidents this quarter.
• 柔らか実務：We had a few incidents this quarter, about three in total.
  後者は事実＋“やわらかさ”で受け手のストレスを下げます。

9) よくある誤解と回避

• × a few of time（不可算名詞 ×）→ a little time
• × a little informations（不可算名詞に複数 ×）→ a little information
• × few of people（of の誤用）→ few people / a few of the people（特定集合なら the を）
